Manish Patel[1] is an independent UK-based writer, producer and director[2] of Gujarati Indian and East African heritage.

His debut feature film, Triads, Yardies and Onion Bhajees[3] (2003), for which Patel served as writer and producer, starred the late former British gangster Dave Courtney.[4][5] The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003[6][7] and is notable for being a pre-cursor to the acclaimed Sky TV series Gangs Of London, sharing many of the films themes about warring factions of London’s criminal underworld.

In 2005, Patel featured in an acting role as Ash Desai[8] opposite Sanjeev Bhaskar in the BBC crime comedy Chopratown[9]. His second feature production, Cash and Curry, starred Ameet Chana, Lee Latchford-Evans and Pooja Shah. It was completed in 2007 and was released in 2010 in the UK and Ireland. The film won best film at the Portobello Film Festival in 2007[10] and was subsequently selected for the Mumbai Film Festival.[11]

Patel’s directorial debut came with the release of the crime thriller, Full English Breakfast,[12] which reunited him with Dave Courtney.[13][14] The film became known as the first movie to feature a real-life water boarding interrogation scene.[15] He also wrote and produced the film which was released in the UK by 101 Films,[16][17][18] released as Original Gangster[19] in the USA by Revolver Entertainment, aornd as British Scarface[20][21] by Ascot Films in Germany.

In 2007 Patel came to the defence of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, whom he felt was being racially abused[22] by certain fellow housemates in Channel 4's Celebrity Big Brother reality TV series. Patel's quotes were subsequently featured in the book Shilpa, The Biography, published by John Blake.[23]
