Man Suang (Thai : แมนสรวง) is a 2023 Thai historical mystery-drama film starring Apo Nattawin Wattanagitiphat and Mile Phakphum Romsaithong. It centers on the character of Khem, a commoner during the rein of King Rama III of the Rattanakosin period, who gets embroiled in the sociopolitical conflicts of a secret entertainment center, the titular Man Suang. Along his journey, he is accompanied by Wan, his best friend, and makes the acquaintance of Chatra, a nobleman with a hidden motive who works at Man Suang.

The film was conceptualized by the team at Be On Cloud in May-June of 2022 following the success of KinnPorsche The Series. A pilot trailer was released by be on cloud in at the KinnPorsche world tour Bangkok concert in July 2022.[12]

the production went through changes and the finalized script was ready by January 2022. filming began in February 2022 [13] and was completed by May 2023.[14]

Plot

Khem and Wan, two young men from the city of Paet Riw, are tasked with investigating clues in Man Suang, the most majestic and mysterious entertainment venue in Bangkok. Behind the curtain of happiness, this place where international people gather was the site of political planning and settlement at the end of the reign of King Rama III of the Rattanakosin period. Two friends joined the troupe and met Chat, the band's hand. Their relationship develops as Man Shuang's dark secrets and the knots in their hearts gradually come out.[15]

Production

BeOnCloud teamed up with several historians and Thai cultural experts from Chulalongkorn University to understand and interpret the sociopolitical climate of that era accurately. An elaborate set for the interiors of Man Suang was constructed and filming took place in {location}

The team also approached Thai ministry of culture which approved part of the budget for promotion and distribution of the film locally and worldwide.[16]

The art director for the movie was Nakrob Moonmanas, a renowned name in the field, and his unique poster designs generated a lot of fanfare from the public.

A special teaser and poster was released at Cannes Film Festival in the month of May 2023.[17][18]

Post production was done by White Light[19] (KinnPorsche[20] and Call Me By Your Name[21]) and the official trailer was released on 24th June 2023.[22]

Music

The OST for the film, titled เร้น by Thai band COCKTAIL was released on 8th August 2024. The band collaborated with 28Production, a well known orchestra in Thailand to produce the complete background scores of the film.

Marketing

The promotion of the movie was done in creative ways by hosting an Open Call : Art of Man Suang[23], and a fanart contest[24] for the general public and fans alike to generate buzz around the movie both online and offline. Several winners and runner ups were selected whose works were exhibited at the official premier of the movie at Song Wat Street[25], where a collaboration was held between the local businesses and the marketing team. Pop up shops and variety stores sold merch and other fan paraphernalia for several days.

Release

The film had its theatrical release on 24th August 2023 across Thailand. BeOnCloud confirmed subsequent releases in Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia and several other countries on their official instagram account.[26][27][28]

Reception

The film received critical acclaim and mostly positive reviews.

Man Suang set the record for the highest grossing advance ticket sales in the Thai movie industry in the two prior decades.[29][30]

Thai movie critic Watchman called it "one of the most interesting Thai movies of this year".[31]

Themes and Styles

Following the success of Kinnporsche The Series, the actors and team at BeOnCloud were keen to create more works of international standards, and the concept of Man Suang provided just that opportunity. The leads were vocal about promoting Thai culture on a much wider, global scale, and the directors shared the same vision. In an interview with Elle India, Apo talked about "the uniqueness of the story, which showcases an extremely different era, as well as the different sexuality of the characters", highlighting the queerness of some of the characters, which forms a sublte but nuanced subplot.

In another interview with Thairath, Mile talks about the "soft power" of Thailand and how they hope to make it a cultural export of the country via movies like this.

A Vogue Feature Video released in August showcased the dedication that went into preparing for the roles of Chat and Khem, from learning Thai traditional dance for Apo to playing the taphon for Mile. }}
