Malcolm Reed, portrayed by Dominic Keating, is a fictional character in the television series Star Trek: Enterprise.

Reed served as chief armory officer, security, and tactical officer on board the Enterprise.

Biography

Reed was born September 2, 2117, to a British family with a background in the Royal Navy. Both his father and grandfather before him served well in the navy. He was raised on the water and grew up handling boats. Like his family, Reed wanted to serve at sea, but his aquaphobia prevented him and he eventually joined Starfleet instead. This created a rift between him and his family, especially his father.

Reed always found it difficult to grow close to people, as he mentioned to Tucker in the episode "Shuttlepod One". However, he had come to view the crew of the Enterprise as his family. In "Minefield", he expressed the opinion to Captain Archer that fraternization had no place on a starship.

His strait-laced personality led to similar arguments, mostly regarding the tactical and security status aboard Enterprise. Reed had a habit of jumping straight to a paranoid conclusion and assuming the worst.

He suffers from a handful of allergies, including the enzyme bromelain, which is found in pineapple. Ironically, pineapple is his favourite food.

Somewhere between 2151 and 2151, Reed managed to stabilize the EM barrier, the earliest version of a force field. He had a number of other accomplishments, such as the first ever use of a "red alert" (which he called a tactical alert), and modified phase pistols.[1]

In late Star Trek: season four, it was revealed that he had ties to Section 31 - a division of Starfleet Intelligence which was reportedly allowed to take "extraordinary measures" to protect the interests of earth. Reed was discovered in a coerced sabotage attempt and detained, and forced to choose where to place his loyalties.

Mirror Universe

In the Mirror Universe, Malcolm Reed was in charge of the Military Assault Command Operations, or MACOs, in contrast to his prime counterpart's dislike of the MACOs in early season 3. Reed was ruthless and enjoyed inflicting pain on others, eager to kill or maim those he saw as traitors in the agony booth. Though Captain Archer respected Reed, he did not quite trust him.

Reed was severely injured in an explosion rigged by a Gorn by the name of Slar. According to Phlox (Star Trek)|Doctor Phlox, he would only have a fifty-fifty chance of survival. He also hinted that the crew would not be all that disappointed if he were to die.

In the "Glass Empires" anthology, it is mentioned in the story "Age of the Empress" that Reed did, in fact, survive. His title was stripped, and he was forced to be subordinate to Travis Mayweather.[2]
