A makeup artist (MUA) is an artist who works on the human body, applying makeup and prosthetics to people for a variety of enterprises such as theatre, television, cinema, fashion, magazines, and other similar endeavours, which may include all parts of the modelling business. The Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, as well as accolades from the entertainment business such as the Emmy Awards and the Golden Globes, have been granted to people in this field in the entertainment industry throughout the years. Professional licences are necessary by several agencies in order for them to recruit makeup artists in certain countries. Despite the fact that many larger production firms have in-house makeup artists on their payroll, the majority of MUA's work on a freelance basis and their schedules are variable depending on the assignment.

As well as on the fashion catwalk, fashion makeup is often employed in magazine photography and editorials. Avant-garde makeup is also a method that may be employed for projects that need themes that are experimental in nature. As well as in television and cinema, fashion makeup is often employed, ranging from the natural prime appearance to more technical applications such as colour balancing.

It is possible to apply makeup using an airbrush, which is a tiny air-operated device that sprays different media, including certain goods and water-based cosmetics, via the use of a nebulizer. The first recorded instance of this form of cosmetic application goes back to the 1925 film adaptation of Ben-Hur; however, it has lately been re-popularized as a result of the development of high-definition television and digital photography, which allow for greater levels of detail to be captured. With the airbrush, high-coverage liquid foundations with a thin consistency are applied to the skin for complete coverage without the need for a significant build-up of product.
