Majed Faraj is one of the most important figures in the Palestinian Authority. He is the head of the P.A.'s General Intelligence Service [GIS], and as such, he coordinates operations between the P.A. and Israel. He speaks decent Hebrew, and interacts comfortably with Israeli military and security personnel. He has boasted of the excellent relations that he enjoys with both Israelis and Americans. He is one of Mahmoud Abbas's closest confidants. In October 2023, it was Faraj who inserted a statement on behalf of Abbas, to the effect that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian cause (Abbas was reportedly miffed by this). Faraj's closeness to Israel is ironic, given that he was raised in poverty, in the Dheisheh Refugee Camp near Bethlehem, and that his own father was killed by the Israelis. He is nevertheless a lynch pin of the P.A. security establishment, critical to its work that so directly benefits Israel. Despite his obvious importance, Faraj tends to avoid the spotlight. Many Palestinians living on the West Bank do not even know who he is.
