These days, the phrases maid service, cleaning service, apartment cleaning, and janitorial service are more often used to describe a specialised outside agency that offers a certain service to people, companies, fraternal organisations and associations, in addition to residential premises.

It is possible for maid services to vary from what is typically thought of as the historically prominent services done by a maid, and it is also possible for male and/or female personnel to give these services.

A maid, who was once part of an intricate hierarchy in wealthy homes and successful businesses, may now be the only domestic worker that upper-income and even middle-income households can afford to hire as a household domestic-help employee. This is because maids are more affordable than other types of domestic workers. Maids are responsible for doing standard home tasks such as cooking, ironing, washing, cleaning, food shopping, walking the family dog, and taking care of the youngsters living in the household.
