Mahmoud Sabahy (Persian:محمود صباحی) (born 1969) is an Iranian scholar[1], sociologist, poet, translator[2], researcher, essayist[3], and theater director[4][5]. He was a faculty member[6] teaching philosophy and sociology at the Faculty of Arts and Architecture at Azad University in Tehran. He also has been a member of the Islamic Encyclopaedia Foundation. Because of his independent views and actions, he was expelled[7] from the University and the Foundation in 2011, and immigrated to Germany.
Sabahy is a polymath and refers to himself as an 'autodidact'. His articles and publications consist of research and analysis in vast areas of philosophy, sociology, religion, literature, art, and political science[8].
Views
His specific focus is on Iranian society[9] which he calls "a Ta'zieh society"[10]. Ta'zieh is a Shi'ite Islamic passion play performed in Iran based on historical religious stories, using chanting and other dramatic techniques to evoke from the audience deep emotions of hatred for the oppressor and affinity with the victims. Sabahy sees Ta'zieh as an analogy for the current oppressed people of Iran[11] and their corrupt overlords.
He also maintains that minorities in a society are the true reflection and soul of creativity. He believes that limiting and censoring the views of minorities is a form of societal suicide.
Special area of interest
Sabahy gives special attention and study to the Bábi/Bahá'í movement[12] which has had the harshest treatment especially from the Shi'ite leaders, even to the present time. He attributes this hysterical reaction to the fear of the clergy of the masses becoming enlightened and aware of new ideas[13]. There is no clergy in the Bahá'í Faith, and the teachings emphasize independent investigation of truth, equality of women and men, and harmony of science and religion, among other principles.
