Maggie Grout, born September 2, 1999 is an international nonprofit founder and CEO of Thinking Huts which builds 3D printed schools with communities where they are needed.[1] According to the World Economic Forum, the process of 3D printing, which is also known as additive manufacturing, uses a digital file to build solid objects layer by layer – meaning there is less waste compared to traditional methods, which often use moulds or hollowed out materials. The solution addresses the lack of sufficient investment in physical infrastructure, which is one of the biggest barriers to education. [2]

Early life

Grout graduated from University of Colorado at Boulder, Leeds School of Business in 2021.[3]

Career

Thinking Huts was founded by Grout in 2015 when she was 15, according to an interview by CBS The Talk in 2023. [4]

According to Fast Company, Thinking Huts employ local construction teams that produce hybrid designs, and sources the doors and windows locally incorporating traditional building methods and is establishing 3D-technician programs for native teams with on-site training to create local jobs.[5]

Grout gave a TED talk in 2021 on how the education crisis can be tackled with 3D printing. [6]

Personal life

Shared in an interview by Tatler and BBC World News, Grout was born in a poor rural village in China and was later adopted.[7] She was abandoned in a basket and discovered by an orphanage worker. [8]
