Apple Inc. developed and maintains the App Store (sometimes known as the Mac App Store), which is a digital distribution channel for macOS applications. During Apple's "Back to the Mac" event, which took place on October 20, 2010, the platform was unveiled. App submissions from registered developers started being accepted by Apple on November 3, 2010, in advance of the company's debut.

A free upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.6 for all existing Snow Leopard users included the debut of the Mac App Store on January 6, 2011. Apple stated that more than one million copies of the app had been downloaded in the first 24 hours of its release date.

A new version of the App Store will be featured in macOS Mojave, according to an announcement made by Apple on June 4, 2018.
