M. Tariq Ahsan is a Bangladeshi academic and professor at the Institute of Education and Research (IER), University of Dhaka. His work focuses on inclusive education, curriculum development, early childhood education, and education policy in Bangladesh and the Asia–Pacific region. He has been involved in national and international initiatives related to teacher preparation, gender and inclusive pedagogies, and education in emergencies.
Early Life and Education
Ahsan completed his PhD at Monash University, Australia, in 2015, where his research examined teacher preparation for inclusive education. He earned a master's degree from Flinders University of South Australia in 2004–05 under the Australian Development Scholarship programme. Prior to this, he completed a master's degree in education and a Bachelor of Education (Honours) at the Institute of Education and Research, University of Dhaka.
Career
Ahsan began his career in 2001–02 as an Associate Coordinator (Education and Research) at the Centre for Services and Information on Disability (CSID) in Dhaka. He joined the Institute of Education and Research, University of Dhaka, in 2001 and later became a professor. He served as Chairman of the Department of Special Education at IER in 2006–2007.
National curriculum work
Ahsan has been associated with curriculum reform initiatives undertaken by the Government of Bangladesh. Between 2023 and 2024, he served as Lead Consultant for the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) during the national curriculum transformation process, supported by UNICEF Bangladesh. His work contributed to the shift from traditional teacher-centred pedagogy to competency-based, experiential learning approaches for pre-primary to Grade XII.
He has also worked with the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs on the Early Learning Development Standards (ELDS) and the operational framework for early childhood care and development (ECCD).
Education in emergencies and other roles
Ahsan was a Technical Committee Member in developing a learning framework for Rohingya (FDMN) children in Bangladesh in 2017–2018, an initiative supported by UNICEF and UNHCR. He has worked with national and international organizations including Plan International, Save the Children, CBM, VSO, BRAC, and others in areas related to inclusion and education policy.
Contributions to inclusive and special education
Ahsan has been involved in several regional and international research initiatives on inclusive education. He contributed to a multi-country project titled Impact of Gender and Inclusive Pedagogies (GIP) on Student Participation and Learning Achievement, conducted in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste, supported by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE).
Earlier, he participated in projects at Monash University on inclusive education in Asian countries funded by AusAID. He co-developed the Inclusive Learning Friendly Environment (ILFE) teacher toolkit with the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok.
He also contributed to the conceptual framework for inclusive education under Bangladesh's Primary Education Development Programme (PEDP-3) and later advised on PEDP-4 through RTI International.
Editorial and academic leadership
Ahsan is the founding editor of the Asian Journal of Inclusive Education. He also serves on editorial boards or review panels for journals including:
