Metikurke Ramaswamy Kamala, popularly known as M R Kamala (Kannada: ಎಂ.ಆರ್.ಕಮಲ) in the literary world[1], is an Indian author in Kannada language known for her poems and translation works primarily related to feminism.[2][3]

Personal Life

Early life and education[4]

Kamala was born at Metikurke in the Hassan district of Karnataka.[5] Her father N H Raamaswamy was a farmer and her mother Vishaalakshi was a homemaker. She was the 10th out of the 11 children to the couple. Her first exposure to the literary world was through her father.[6] Her father was well-versed in Kannada, English, Urdu, Sanskrit and Telugu languages. He used to perform Gamaka (storytelling) art. Kamala's early education was in the nearby schools, in the rural area. She moved to Bangalore after her SSLC examinations. She graduated with B.A degree from MES college, Bangalore and did her post graduation studies (M.A) at Bangalore University majoring in Kannada language in 1980. After masters, she pursued her interest in law and obtained a degree in LLB as well.[7]

Career

She started her academic career working as a lecturer in Kannada language at Halebidu in 1981. She is now serving as a principal of Shivanahalli Government Pre University College, Rajajinagar, Bengaluru.[3]
