Meg Zany is an American visual artist and curator. She currently lives in Los Angeles. Zany is best known for her "Courage Has No Gender" art campaign, which highlights gender inequality and celebrates the achievements of women.[1][2]
Early life
Zany worked for nearly a decade in the corporate world as a recruiter in the aerospace industry.[3][4]
Visual art
In 2016, Zany began her career as an urban artist, utilizing the street art medium, stencils, to create recognizable imagery due to its repetition.[5] Her work addresses themes of female empowerment, positivity and childhood nostalgia, and can be found in dozens of cities across the world, from Los Angeles to New York to London to Paris and Berlin.[4][6] Blending humor and hope, Zany's work encourages viewers to confront significant social issues.[7]
Courage Has No Gender series, 2017
Launched in 2017, this public awareness campaign features faces of influential women such as Amelia Earhart, Serena Williams, Laverne Cox, RuPaul, and Ellen DeGeneres to dismantle gender stereotypes and highlight their inspiring contributions to society.[8][9] The project was touted for its feminism, but also its diversity.[2]
Strawberry Shortcake series, 2018
In this series, which Zany paints both on canvas but also as street art murals, the artist re-imagines the iconic 1980s cartoon character as a sassy and anti-establishment contemporary woman.[10][3] The character is often accompanied by text phrases, ranging from "happily ever after is a state of mind," to "life's short, cake first," to "why should my strawberries cost less than his" [3][11][12]. Through this series, Zany juxtaposes adult phrases and female mindsets with the nostalgia of childhood.[3]
Not 4 Sale series, 2018
In the wake of the #MeToo movement, Zany created a series of wheatpastes of images of vending machines containing men and women featuring the words "Not 4 sale. Consent is always sexy."[3]
The Strawberry Series, 2021
In this collection of work, Zany combines the raw energy of the street art aesthetic with the language of abstraction to challenge viewers to formulate their own interpretation of the image.[13]
Exhibitions and Partnerships
Zany's work has been featured in several solo and group shows.[14] In 2017, the Venice Institute of Contemporary Art mounted a two-artist exhibition entitled "Wall to Wall," of Zany's art, alongside the work of Tanner Goldbeck.[15] The following year, she partnered with the Downtown Women's Center in Los Angeles to create a mural in celebration of International Women's Day.[16][17] In 2021, her work was shown at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills in a group exhibition entitled Degrees of Separation, alongside Dave Navarro, RISK and Blek Le Rat.[18] Zany's art is included in the French Art Collection in Paris and Superchief Gallery in Los Angeles, among other galleries.[19][20]
Curatorial
The FameYard, 2018
During COVID, Zany served as the curator of the FameYard, an iconic alcove for street art and graffiti on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.[6]
Earth Day Global Halt, 2020
To mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Zany coordinated this event featuring urban artists around the world to comment on how the planet is being abused and seek global change.[21][22]
The Art Gallery at Four Seasons Hotel, Westlake Village, 2022
In 2022, Zany was appointed the curator of the art gallery at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village.[23][24] Zany's vision for the space is to introduce a new audience to the aesthetic of urban art and challenge the notion of a highly polished and refined exhibition space.[25]
Personal life
In 2019, Zany was romantically connected to Jack Osbourne.[26]
