Luke Smithwick (born December 11, 1979) is an American professional ski mountaineer, alpinist, and expedition leader. Smithwick is the founder and CEO of Himalaya Alpine Guides, and has been guiding professionally for 25 years. He has led over 90 Himalayan expeditions across Nepal, Pakistan, and India, including ascents of 8,000 meter peaks and first ski descents on 6 continents.[1]
Climbing career
Luke’s expedition experience includes Everest (Northeast Ridge), Dhaulagiri (Northeast Ridge), Gasherbrum Two (Southwest Ridge), Shishapangma (Northwest Buttress, ski descent), Denali (West Buttress, ski traverse) and numerous 7,000 and 6,000 meter peaks, many with ski descents.[2]
From 2014 to 2018, Luke was the avalanche forecaster for the Kashmir region of India, and the snow safety director for the Gulmarg Ski Resort.[3]
Himalaya alpine guides
Luke is the founder and CEO of Himalaya Alpine Guides, a small group exploratory alpine climbing and ski mountaineering service.
The Himalaya 500
Luke is currently pursuing the Himalaya 500, a project to ski 500 aesthetic lines in the Himalayas while exploring climate change and mountain culture along the way.[4]
Personal Life
Luke’s home is Victor, Idaho, where he resides between expeditions with his dog, Wolfie.[5]
