Luis Enrique Silvestre (born May 14, 1977, in La Plata, Argentina) is an Argentinian mathematician specializing in partial differential equations. He is a professor at the University of Chicago.

Early Life and Education

Silvestre earned his Licenciado en Matemática from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata in December 2000. He then pursued his Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin, completing it in May 2005 under the supervision of Luis Caffarelli. His dissertation focused on the regularity of the obstacle problem for a fractional power of the Laplace operator. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Career

After obtaining his Ph.D., Silvestre served as a Courant Instructor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, from 2005 to 2008. In September 2008, he joined the University of Chicago as an assistant professor, later becoming an associate professor in September 2013, and a full professor in September 2018. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Research

Silvestre's research primarily focuses on partial differential equations. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of integro-differential equations and their applications. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
