He was was a professor to many doctors at the old School of Medicine throughout his long career, and was known as El “Maestro” by the faculty[1][2]. A Salvadoran government decree in 1983 stated that Dr. Vásquez "stands out as one of the highest exponents of medical science in our country" [3].

Early life and education

Vásquez was born on 26 August 1897 in Chalatenango, El Salvador [1]. He pursued medical studies at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of El Salvador[1]Template:Rp, later completing postgraduate training in France starting in 1928 at the cardiology department of Hôpital Laennec de Paris before returning to his home country.[4]

Career

After completing his studies, Vásquez became a professor at the School of Medicine of the University of El Salvador, where he taught therapeutics and led anatomico-clinical conferences at the Rosales Hospital. He was widely recognized for his rigorous teaching methods and his insistence on high ethical standards in medical practice. His philosophy emphasized medicine as a vocation rather than a trade, and he discouraged poorly trained practitioners, warning that "better no doctor than one unprepared."

In the late 1930s, Vásquez organized the Jornadas Médicas Departamentales, medical conferences held in provincial areas of El Salvador to promote continuing education and outreach. He was also a founding member of the Sociedad de Medicina Interna y Cardiología de El Salvador in 1953[5] (today the "Asociacion de Medicina Interna de El Salvador").

Character and reputation

Colleagues and former students described Vásquez as humble, kind, and of "intachable moralidad" (impeccable morality). His nickname El Maestro reflected both his role as a teacher and the personal respect he inspired.

In 1983, the Legislative Assembly created the National Medicine Award "Doctor Luis Edmundo Vásquez" by Decree Nº 278, awarded annually on his birthday.[3]

On June 30, 1987, El Salvador issued a 15 Salvadoran centavo stamp with the image of Dr. Vásquez[8]

In September, 2021, Salvadoran Health Minister, Francisco Alabi, named the Centro Nacional de Simulación en Medicina (National Center for Simulation in Medicine) after Dr. Vásquez [9][10]. During the naming ceremony, the Health Minister said (translated from Spanish) "Dr. Luis Edmundo Vásquez's intelligence and career path are truly admirable; I admired his work even back in my student days." [11].

The Faculty of Health Sciences "Dr. Luis Edmundo Vásquez" at the José Matías Delgado University is also named after him.
