Luigi Porto (Cosenza, November 22nd, 1981) is an Italian composer, sound designer and music producer.
He has released albums of Art rock.[1][2][3][4][5][6] and Electroacoustic music[7][8][9], has been a member of the Italian band Maisie and is an author of symphonic music and film soundtracks.
Life
Born in Cosenza, Italy, he started his career playing in local New wave bands and writing music for local theater companies. In the early 2000s his first full-length album "Look At Me"[10] under the monicker Appleyard College was released by Cold Current Productions, a work poised between a psychedelic indie-folk and a sort of chamber ambient.
Later he joined the Italian art-rock band Maisie, collaborating on the albums Balera Metropolitana and Maledette Rockstar released on Snowdonia Dischi and playing bass, synthesizers and acoustic guitar in the band's national tours.
In 2008 the cult horror director Romano Scavolini hired him to write the soundtrack to L'apocalisse delle scimmie, a very long experimental film that is still unreleased to this day. However the soundtrack, partially merged into the album Scimmie[11][12] published by the Austrian (Cineploit) label and by Snowdonia Dischi itself, was released with the permission of the director and the production. The album, defined "monumental"[13] "superlative"[14] gathered attention from critics and being nominated among Best albums of 2014 by the Italian magazines Impatto Sonoro[15], Distorsioni[16], Indie-Zone.
In 2012 he moved to New York, where he co-founded with Joao MacDowell[17] the International Brazilian Opera Company[18][19][20]in 2012. His first opera is Anita di Laguna[21] [22][23], [24] [25], a work inspired by the life of the Brazilian revolutionary Anita Garibaldi. The orchestral Suite from the opera was commissioned in 2019 by the Orchestra di Sanremo[26].
In 2019 Porto scored the Italian film Arberia, the first film to be shot in Arbëreshë language, and the Indian social commentary thriller film The Knot[27], selected at Santa Barbara and Shanghai.
In 2021 he released Tell Uric[28][29][30][31] [32][33] on his newborn label Respirano Records), an album that marks a return to the song form. For the same label, in 2023 Porto has curated the compilation No Need To Fear[34][35][36], that brings together artists from New York and his hometown of Cosenza.
