Lucas Gorelick is a youth activist in Berkeley, California. His notability stems from his political activism and a lawsuit involving himself and the Washoe County School District in 2022.[1]

Early life and education

Lucas Gorelick grew up in Reno, Nevada. He attended Reno High School in which he participated in a number of youth activism groups before and after being involved in the L.G. et al vs Washoe County School District lawsuit[1] in regards to his constitutionally protected rights that he believed were violated by the school and district administrators.

Work

Gorelick first got involved in activism with High School Democrats of America in which he was appointed Northern Nevada Director and Everytown for Gun Safety in which he was appointed Field Office Director for Nevada with Students Demand Action. Gorelick's hard work and activism led to meetings in Washington, D.C. with high ranking officials such as Catherine Cortez Masto and Jon Ossoff. His Love for politics and making the work a better place did not end there as Gorelick was offered his first political position at just 14 years old as a campaign fellow for Joe Biden. His work ranged from voter outreach to volunteer management and helped to influence the 2020 United States presidential election. Once election came to an end, Gorelick was invited to join Catherine Cortez Masto's re-election campaign as a finance intern for the 2022 Midterms Elections. Just about 2 months before the election, Gorelick joined Nevada Democratic Victory to finish out the election.

Lawsuit

During Gorelick's junior and senior years at Reno High School, a number of false threats against him were called into the school claiming he had a weapon.[1][2] Gorelick, represented by his attorney Luke Busby filled a Federal suit against the Washoe County School District and Reno High School administrators for violating his 4th and 14th amendments.[3] The lawsuit, federally known as "3:22-cv-00228-MMD-CLB L.G. et al v. Washoe County School District"[4] quickly gained national notariety as hundreds of news organizations picked up the story, including The Washington Post, ABC News and Associated Press.[5][6] Just days before Gorelick's 17th birthday he decided to settle in hope that his activism and lawsuit would encourage other kids to stand up for their rights.[7][8]
