Lionel Yu (born July 28, 1989) is a Chinese-American pianist, composer, and YouTuber, best known for his channel MusicalBasics. He is recognized for blending classical piano with electronic dance music (EDM), creating unique interpretations of classical pieces.

Early Life and Education

Lionel Yu was born in Hangzhou, China, and raised in Maryland, United States. Encouraged by his parents, he began piano lessons at a young age and developed a passion for classical music composition during his school years. Although he pursued a degree in business, Yu continued his musical education by taking composition classes at New York University and piano and composition lessons at Juilliard.[1]

Career

In 2008, Yu launched the YouTube channel MusicalBasics to share his original compositions and performances. Over time, he experimented with fusing classical music with genres like dubstep and EDM. His philosophy centers on the belief that simple melodies and harmonies, when performed expressively, can inspire and resonate deeply with audiences.[2]

As of February 2025, MusicalBasics has amassed over 1.27 million subscribers and more than 186 million views.[3]

In 2018, Yu transitioned to a full-time music career, leading to performances at notable venues such as Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall in New York.[4] In March 2022, he made his debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., performing a program that included his EDM remixes of Beethoven's works.[5]

Musical Style and Influences

Yu's musical style is characterized by the integration of classical piano techniques with modern electronic elements. He draws inspiration from composers like Beethoven and Rachmaninoff, aiming to create music that transcends traditional boundaries and resonates on a fundamental human level.[6]
