Lin Ching-Feng (林慶豐) (May 16, 1913 - January 26, 1995), a native of Tainan, Taiwan, was born in a Christian family during Taiwan under Japanese rule.[1]He graduated from Architecture Department, Waseda University in Japan and is one of the first generation of architects in post-war Taiwan[2].

Profile

Lin Ching-Feng was born to a Christian family in Tainan in 1913. His father, Lin Yu-Chi (林毓奇), was a student of Rev. Thomas Barclay.[3] He was enrolled into Architecture Department, Waseda University in 1934 and used (a sanatorium built at the foot of a mountain) as his graduation design in 1941. Mr. Lin is one of the few Taiwanese who received higher architecture education in Japan and is also one of the first generation of architects in post-war Taiwan.[4] He died in 1995.[1]

Career

Mr. Lin graduated from Waseda University and worked for Kajima, the top of the 5 major construction corporations in Japan at that time and became one the three steel structure engineers at Kajima Corporation one year later. He acted as a structure engineer for the US army stationed in Japan as he was fluent in both Japanese and English. He returned to Taipei and created an architect office in 1947.[5][6] He was involved in the creation of two early architecture societies in Taiwan, including Taiwan Architects Association(臺灣省建築技師公會)and Republic of China Architectural Institute(中華民國建築學會). He received the Top 10 Excellent Architects Golden Tripod Award of the first session in the Republic of China (ROC) in 1967 and he was an honorary member of Architectural Institute of Japan in 1988. He is the first Taiwanese to win the award.[7][8]

Architectural design style

The architectural shapes designed by Mr. Lin are mainly simple cubes or geometric shapes. Usually, exposed column and beam structures are used as facade decorations to form a simple and bright appearance, and climate-regulating components such as sunshades are added in consideration of the regional features.[4]

“Achieving spatial function” is Mr. Lin’s main consideration in his design, and the function comes from the needs of the owner and the society. Architectural types with special functions account for a large part in his works, such as hospitals, schools, assembly spaces, office buildings, etc.[9]
