Lily Cooke (born 2007 in Donabate, Dublin) is an Irish luger. At the age of 16, she became the first Irish athlete to compete in luge at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics in Gangwon Province, South Korea.[1]

Early career

Lily Cooke was inspired to pursue luge after watching Elsa Desmond, Ireland’s first Olympic luge competitor, at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Motivated by Desmond’s achievements, she reached out to the Irish Luge Federation to begin training. Desmond, who had transitioned from a medical career to competitive luge, became Cooke’s coach and mentor.[1][2]

2024 Winter Youth Olympics

In January 2024, Cooke represented Ireland at that year's Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon Province, South Korea. She competed in the women's luge event at the Alpensia Sliding Centre, a venue used during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang County. In her first international competition, she finished 27th with a combined time of 1:42.982, reaching speeds of over 100 km/h.[3][1] Cooke also served as a flagbearer for the Ireland team during the opening ceremony, alongside alpine skier Finlay Wilson.[4]

Personal life and education

At the time of the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics, Cooke was balancing her training with preparations for the Irish Leaving Certificate exams. She expressed gratitude for the support of her coach, Elsa Desmond, and the encouragement from her community.[5][6]
