Caleb Gottfried (born September 16, 2006), known professionally as Lil Snark; stylized as Lil Snvrk), is an American rapper. Born in Brooklyn and later raised in New Jersey, he started his musical career as an affiliate of the hip hop collective ASAP Mob,.[1] from which he gained inspiration. In February 2021, Snark's single "Sperm in My Testicles"[2] was released online as a joke and within weeks began circulating around the internet through memes on platforms like TikTok.[3][4] The success of his later projects led to a joint venture record deal with Sony Music Entertainment, AWGE,[5] and Playboi Carti's Opium[6]

His debut studio album Long.Live.Opium* (2023)[7] landed spots on multiple Spotify editorial playlists and was later certified RIAA certification|gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album was preceded by multiple of Snark's lesser known albums such as, Snarkotics, Vol. 3, EMERGENCE and SNARK GOES DARK which all were given mixed reviews by critics. In September 2023, Snark revealed a clothing collaboration between him and VLONE.[8]

Early life

Caleb Gottfried was born on September 16, 2006, in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn, a borough of New York City. He grew up as an only child and was extremely extroverted during childhood. He was extremely technologically advanced by the age of 6, and he had a somewhat successful YouTube channel by 2012.[9]

Caleb started writing lyrics since elementary school, but he didn't start rapping until age ten, when he felt too inspired to keep it for himself. Caleb grew up admiring Harlem-based rap collective ASAP Mob. He was also influenced by Kanye West, Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, Metro Boomin, Future, and Kodak Black.

When Caleb was 16 years old, he was contacted back by a member of the ASAP Mob regarding a record deal. After considering the implications, he decided to go through with the agreement. Based on the analytical data available to the public, the deal has positively impacted his growth so far.[10]

Career

2016–2017: Career beginnings

In 2016, Snark started posting now deleted tracks under the name "Yung Snxrk" on SoundCloud, an audio streaming service. He later changed his name to Lil Snvrk because people had a difficult time pronouncing it. However, this would mark the beginning of his legitimate recording material aside from just written lyrics. This is where Snark would experiment with different sounds, whether people listened or not.

2019–2021: Spotify era

In early 2019, Lil Snvrk started taking his music quite seriously, as his music would start to appear on pay-per-stream platforms like Spotify under another deleted alias "STG Snark". Importantly, the use of the stagename Lil Snvrk didn't start until 2021 when his first single Crimes Up released. "Sperm in My Testicles" and "Fat Sussy Balls" were also very commercially successful yet very controversial. These songs were uploaded as a joke, yet they tend to overshadow his discography.

2023–present: Long.Live.Opium* and upcoming seventh studio album

On September 1, 2023, Lil Snvrk released Long.Live.Opium* on streaming services, executively produced by Playboi Carti featuring uncredited vocals by Yeat. It was met by generally positive reviews from critics. It debuted at the top of editorial playlists like RapCaviar on Spotify. Over the following week he shared details about his upcoming project, produced by Travis Scott and Mike Dean. The snippets of music shared were captioned "insani partum, leading to later confirmed speculation that they were part of an upcoming studio album entitled insani partum. On January 15, 2024, Lil Snvrk will reportedly release insani partum as a 9 song album with appearances like Ken Carson, and Tyler, The Creator.

Business ventures

In early 2023, Snark signed a record deal with Sony Music Entertainment worth $500,000. His first professional studio album "insani partum" is planned under the deal, but it allows him to continue releasing mixtapes through Opium. Other members of the A$AP Mob have also signed deals with Sony Music Entertainment

In September 2023, Snark and VLONE collaborated for the "SNVRKOTICS"[11] merchandise brand, and are planning to collaborate with high-profile fashion designers and companies.
