Lieutenant

A lieutenant is a junior lieutenant colonel who serves in the military forces, fire departments, police departments, and other organisations around the world.

Despite the fact that the definition of lieutenant varies from one military branch to another, the rank is often split into senior (first lieutenant) and junior (second lieutenant and even third lieutenant) levels in many organisations. In navies, it is often comparable to the army rank of captain; however, it may also refer to a specific position rather than a particular rank. It is also utilised in fire departments, emergency medical services, security services, and law enforcement agencies, among other places.

Furthermore, the term Lieutenant may be used as part of a title in a variety of different organisations that have a defined command structure. It is often used to indicate someone who is "second-in-command," and as a result, it may appear before the name of the rank immediately above it. In an organisation that employs both levels, a "lieutenant master" is likely to be the second-in-command to the "master" in the example above.

Political applications include lieutenant governor in a variety of administrations and Quebec lieutenant governor in Canadian politics and politics in general. An English lord lieutenant is the sovereign's representative in a county or lieutenancy region, while a deputy lieutenant is one of the lord lieutenant's deputies. A lord lieutenant is the highest ranking civil servant in the United Kingdom.
