Levi Glenn McCathern, II is an American litigation lawyer. He is founder and partner at McCathern Shokouhi Evans.

McCathern specializes in high-profile problem solving litigation. Though he is best known for his work with the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL, he has represented many high-profile clients from the sports and entertainment worlds, major corporations, and many other arenas.

He is Board Certified in labor and employment law and civil trial law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.[1][2]

Early life and education

McCathern was born in Perryton, a town in the Texas panhandle, and grew up in Snyder, Texas.

He earned his BA from Baylor University in 1990, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and his law degree from the same institution in 1993. At Baylor he became a member of the Order of Barristers and served as pastor of a church in Travis, Texas.[3]

He was licensed to practice law in Texas in 1993 and became an associate with the firm Godwin & Carlton, P.C. that year. Within five years he became the firm's youngest-ever shareholder.

On October 1, 1998, he founded his own firm, McCathern Wadlington Mooty, LLP, which became known in 2012 as McCathern, PLLC.[4] In 2021 the firm was renamed McCathern, Shokouhi, Evans, Grinke, PLLC to recognize the contributions of its other founding partners.[5] In 2023 the firm was renamed McCathern, Shokouhi, Evans.

Levi McCathern is currently licensed to practice in New York as well as Texas, and in the federal district courts of Arkansas.

Career

Sports

Since 1998 McCathern has represented Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, including defending Jones against a sexual assault lawsuit (which was dismissed by a judge in 2014)[6] and against a defamation lawsuit brought by a woman claiming to be Jones' daughter.[7][8] McCathern represented the Cowboys and the NFL in Super Bowl-related matters in 2011-12 and 2014-15,[9][10] and has represented many Dallas Cowboys players individually, including:

In 2023, he represented NFL Network analyst and former Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin when Irvin was accused of sexual misconduct. Irvin denied the accusations,[11] no charges were ever filed, and his $100 million defamation lawsuit against the accuser and Marriott International Inc., claiming among other things that the accusation resulted in Irvin's being axed from the NFL Network's Super Bowl week coverage,[12] was settled.

In 2024 McCathern represented Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in filing an extortion lawsuit in response to false sexual assault claims. A civil court judge dismissed the claims in June 2024.[13]

With assistance from civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, McCathern represented Reggie Bush in Bush's long-running attempt to get his Heisman Trophy and [USC records back.[14] Their work resulted in the restoration of the Heisman.[15] McCathern also represented Bush in his suit against USC, the Pac-12 Conference, and the NCAA seeking compensation for their use of his Trojans-era name, image, and likeness.[16]

McCathern represented Cowboys defensive tackle Mazi Smith when Smith lost the possessions he had kept in a storage garage to an auction,[17] and Ezekiel Elliot in the matter of a car crash.[18] Over the years McCathern has also represented other professional athletes in litigation matters, such as Eric Williams, Deion Sanders and Emmitt Smith.

Entertainment

In 2024 McCathern defended singer Chris Brown against charges of assault that allegedly took place outside Brown's dressing room.[19] McCathern asserted in interviews with CBS News Texas[20] and TMZ[21] that the $50 million lawsuit against Brown and Yella Beezy was a shakedown, telling TMZ, "It's clear that Chris was targeted in this incident, it's clear [the accuser] saw an opportunity for financial gain." McCathern also represents Brown in a $500 million defamation lawsuit against Ample LLC and Warner Brothers in response to their docuseries Chris Brown: A History of Violence. TMZ reported that McCathern "says folks will always try to make a quick buck off celebs with false allegations, but says the onus is on the studios to weed out the BS."[22]

Over several years McCathern represented guitarist Neal Schon of Journey[23] in Schon's disputes with other band members.[24] McCathern also represents Joe Maldonado (aka Joe Exotic) in the former Tiger King star's efforts to be released from prison and receive a pardon from President Donald Trump because of failing health and exonerating evidence.[25] McCathern told Fox4 that Maldonado "was convicted of a murder-for-hire, but there's a problem with that. No one was killed, no one was paid and no one, except for Joe, was ever charged."[26]

Corporate, finance, and individual

While McCathern is publicly known for representing sports and entertainment figures, he has represented many other types of clients.

Corporate clients have included AIG, The Travelers Companies, Walmart and Whole Foods Market.[3]

Individual and other clients have included investors,[27], a Chamber of Commerce,[28] victims of sexual assault,[29] and farmers claiming the industrial practices of Pilgrim's Pride caused damages to their land.[30] In a widely reported case, he successfully represented a victim of racist violence who accused white classmates of wrapping a rope around her neck and pulling her to the ground.[31][32]

Extracurricular activities

An avid hunter, McCathern was celebrated in 2011 for shooting and killing an 880-pound alligator, possibly the largest ever killed in Texas, that was preying a local rancher's cattle.[33][34]
