Levan Kacharava (Georgian: ლევან კაჭარავა, romanized: levan k'ach'arava; 15 July 1968 – 24 June 2022) was a Georgian businessman known as a founding partner and a co-founding partner of several prominent Georgian companies. His assassination in 2022 drew significant attention.
Early Life and Education
Levan Kacharava was born on 15 July 1968 in Tbilisi, Georgia, to Giorgi Kacharava and Elene Mkheidze. He attended the 53rd Secondary School in Tbilisi and studied at the art college named after Mose Toidze. In 1987, he enrolled at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, graduating in 1992 with a degree in monumental painting.
Career
In 1994, Kacharava co-founded Georgian Transoil with partners and quickly establishing the company as a leader in the trade and transportation of oil products in the South Caucasus. Georgian Transoil was a sponsor of the first Georgian National Olympic team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
Kacharava and his partners subsequently founded the Silk Road Group (SRG), initially focusing on logistics, particularly the transportation of petroleum products from Azerbaijan to Georgia's ports of Poti and Batumi.[1]
The company partnered with major Western corporations, including TOTAL, VITOL, ARMOGAR, and ADDAX-ORYX Group and quickly became one of the most prominent Georgian companies of the post-Soviet period in this field. At its peak, SRG managed the movement of 2,500 rail cars per month between the Caspian region and the Black Sea. SRG later diversified into banking, real estate, hospitality and cold storage. SRG played a role in producing Borjomi mineral water and developing hotels in Tbilisi and Batumi.
In 2006, Kacharava separated his ventures from SRG, founding new companies under the Multiplex brand, including Multiplex Industries Limited and Multiplex Trading Limited in Gibraltar. (2)[2][3]
In 2013, he established Multiplex Logistics Solutions B.V. in the Netherlands, which provided logistics services, including maritime, road and rail transportation from Georgia and Azerbaijan to Central Asia. The company owned cold storage facilities in Tbilisi and Poti. Beyond logistics, Kacharava was involved in various infrastructure, real estate, and energy projects, holding stakes in Georgian Water and Power and Borjomi mineral water.
World Class Fitness Clubs
In 2017, Kacharava, along with his partner, introduced the World Class fitness club brand to Georgia, opening the first club in Tbilisi's Central Hall.[4][5][6]
Phasis Oil LLC
In 2012, Kacharava founded Phasis Oil LLC through the Swiss company Streamtrade SA,[7] with the goal of building a modern oil refinery to supply high-quality fuels to the region, including markets in Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, northern Turkey, and the Mediterranean.[8] The project was supported by a feasibility study by Deloitte in 2019, and a technical audit was completed by Técnicas Reunidas. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), prepared by Eco-Spectri was approved by Georgia's Ministry of Environmental Protection. In December 2019, Phasis Oil held a public conference in Tbilisi, showcasing its partnerships with Deloitte, Técnicas Reunidas, Shell, and Axens.[9] However, the project was halted following Levan Kacharava's death in 2022. He also supported the restoration of St. George's Cathedral in Tbilisi and other churches in Tskneti and Khidi.
