Leslie Joe is a Canadian businessman responsible for founding Sunrise Soya Foods

Early years

At the age of 21, he immigrated from Panyu District, China to Medicine Hat, Canada. He landed a job in a restaurant there. It was also around this time when he also gave himself the English name "Leslie", which sounded British at the time to further associate his life in Canada.

Sunrise (Sunrise Soya Foods)

Joe learned the arts of the tofu trade from his uncle's tofu company, Nam Kee, which he later re-named it to "Sunrise". Sunrise made about 200 blocks of tofu each day, with each of them costing a nickel; the soy pulp was sold to farmers for animal feed. But according to Joe, "the business didn’t do very well in the beginning,” likely because he was only making $10 a day (about $110 today), so he turned to introducing produce to his little company. After that decision, Joe started to see major impacts towards his business. His earnings rose to $200 a day, and officially bought the company from his uncle's widow. Joe got together and later married his wife, Susan, and had a son and three daughters, who also helped him of building his business.

Today, Joe sometimes visits his three daughters still working hard at the facility. He also helps out with the operations when he can.[1][2]
