Lesflicks is a digital streaming platform, events business, and website, aiming to increase the knowledge of, and access to, lesbian and bisexual films and TV.[1][2] The platform offers a lesbian film database[3], a range of online and in-person events[4], and a Video on Demand (VOD) service[5] which is also available as a downloadable App. [6][7][8][9]

Lesflicks is a volunteer-run streaming service and film events company that offers a global VOD platform, to showcase and promote an array of content created by lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LBTQ) womxn, for LBTQ womxn. Lesflicks’ goal as an organisation is to increase the knowledge of, and access to LBTQ+ content with the intention to build a worldwide community of LBTQ+ film fans and content creators via a single platform.[10][11] Lesflicks caters to the diverse, international community of viewers[12] and works with independent filmmakers of Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer films to help connect these films with their audiences.[13]

History

2019

Lesflicks was founded in March 2019 by Naomi Bennett[14], a longtime lesbian lifestyle blogger based in the U.K.[15], aiming to create a Netflix-style platform for LGBTQ+ women’s cinema.[16] Following the successful launch of three film clubs, a number of private collaborative screenings and the creation of the comprehensive film database; the video on demand platform launched on Saturday, July 20th 2019[17], which Bennett announced while attending lesbian arts festival, LFest in 2019.[18] In its first nine months, Lesflicks supported 74 LBQ shorts and features, participated in 34 events and filled 830 seats in screenings across the country.[19]

2020

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lesflicks got involved with a global virtual lesbian festival to support artists, filmmakers, musicians and comedians who may have lost work due to the virus.[20] As well, Lesflicks boosted its content rapidly, having almost 80 titles as of November 2020, compared to having only 10 titles when Britain’s first lockdown began.[21] When the pandemic hit, Bennett pivoted the entire business online, hosting 140 online events by the end of 2020.[22]

Achievements

  • Lesflicks curated and hosted a cinema at the UK’s lesbian arts festival, LFEST between July 19 and 21 2019.[23][24]
  • In July 2020, Lesflicks hosted their first online film festival, which ran from Friday 24th – Sunday 26th July 2020. The film festival showcased a selection of up to 40 short films, and users were able to attend Zoom (software) watch party events and live Q&A sessions with filmmakers. [25]
  • In December 2020, Lesflicks announced it would be hosting its first Lesflicks Film Awards ceremony, which ran from December 2020-February 2021.[26] OutNewsGlobal partnered with Lesflicks for the ceremony.[27]
  • For LGBT History Month 2021, Lesflicks curated a short film program with the theme ‘Mind, Body & Soul,’ which ran throughout February. The programme was made available to community groups, charities, libraries and networks in order to run watch party events to engage their communities and offer support to prevent social isolation during the pandemic.[28]

Operation

The price of complete access to the Lesflicks Video on Demand platform is £4.63 a month (£46.33 a year), but users are offered a free three-day trial.[29]
