Leonid Aronovich Gratvol (born April 16, 1932, died 26 February 2020) was a Soviet and later Israeli chess coach, and Candidate Master. Best known for mentoring Anatoly Karpov and other Soviet grandmasters.[1]
Originally from Chelyabinsk in the former Russian SFSR[2] he is best known for mentoring Anatoly Karpov and shaping the careers of several Soviet Grandmasters.[1] His influence spans decades of youth chess development in both the Soviet Union and Israel. Gratvol graduated from the historical faculty of the Chelyabinsk Pedagogical Institute in 1957.[2] He began coaching in 1953 at the Palace of Pioneers in Chelyabinsk,[2] where he mentored future champions including, Anatoly Karpov, Evgeny Sveshnikov, Alexander Panchenko, Semen Dvoirys, Gennady Timoshchenko, Tatyana Shumyakina.[3]
