Lean Back is a Polish music band from Upper Silesia that played acid jazz/funk, soul, pop and blues from 1985 to 2000. The band's career is documented through its participation in national music festivals and appearances in national broadcast archives.
Band History
The band began their musical career in the mid-1980s with a blues concert at the Pulsar club in Ruda Śląska - Wirek, where they played songs by artists such as B.B. King, Luther Allison, and Jeff Beck. The founding members of the group were Ireneusz Kucharczyk (guitarist and vocalist), Janusz Frychel (bass), Zbigniew Szczerbiński (drums), and Tomasz Kupka (pianist). In 1989, the band performed their original jazz-rock repertoire (including the compositions "Reiken", "Appel" and "My guardian angel") at the "Live Rock Evening" concert in Ruda Śląska with a new lineup featuring Damian Jambor (drums), Wojciech Feodorów (trumpet), and Jarosław Lelen (saxophonist).[1][2][3]
In 1990, the band performed at the Spodek Arena in Katowice as the winner of the qualifying round for the "Rawa Blues Festival”. The 1990s brought a new rehearsal space at the Silesian Dance Theatre in Bytom, several line-up changes, the development of acid jazz sound, concerts in clubs and at music events, including the "Silesia Jazz Festival", "Neorockowisko" in Łódź, "Głogów Jazz Meetings" (as the opening act for Ireneusz Dudek), "Jazz in Marchołt (as part of a concert series with artists such as Michał Urbaniak and Walk Away, Lora Szafran and New Presentation, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Jarosław Śmietana and Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski) and the grand finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. From this period come adaptations of George Gershwin's "Summertime", Jaco Pastorius' "Soul Intro – The Chicken" and original compositions such as "For You," "Uncle Fafik's Thresher," and "One More Time". The band was gradually joined by Zbigniew Janowski (drums), Marian Kowalik (bass guitar), then Maciej Kałwak and then Jarosław Kierkowski (bass guitarists), and graduates from the Katowice Academy of Music: Janusz Biedrowski (saxophonist), Jacek Dobrzański (guitarist), Robert Zug and Michał Zabrzeński (trombonists), Krzysztof Nowakowski (drums), and Dariusz Wantuch (pianist). Since 1990, the band has regularly collaborated with singers Dariusz Mazur, Joanna Mróz, Krzysztof Pietrzak, Dariusz Niebudek, Patrycja Gola, Alina Trefon, and Justyna Gwardecka.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
The 1990s were also marked by concerts and live recordings by the band, including appearances on Radio Flash, TV Polonia, and TVP2.[1][2]
In 1999, MR released the band's only full-length album, titled 10 plus 1. Patrycja Gola accepted the invitation and sang as a guest on the album with singers Andrzej "Papa-Gonzo" Gąszczyk and Małgorzata Orczyk, as well as guitarists Marek Raduli and Michał Czachowski. The album featured soul songs such as "Her Secret" (Dobrzański, Feodorów, Kupka/Hypki), "Very..." (Kupka/Feodorów), an interpretation of "Strawberry Fields Forever" (Lennon/McCartney), "Moments with P" (Kupka, Dobrzański/Kałwak), and the closing track "Sevenement" (Dobrzański, Kupka, Feodorów).[1]
After releasing the Christmas album Lean Back Christmas Carols 2000 in 2000, featuring Justyna Gwardecka and vocals by the children Elżbieta and Paulina Kupka, Martyna and Jakub Dobrzański, Marta Feodorów and Wojciech Minkina[4], the group gave their final concert for Channel 3 of Polish Television and then it disbanded.
