Lauren YS (born 1991) is an LA-based muralist, illustrator, multi-media artist, and activist of Chinese and American descent. They are also known by the pseudonyms Lauren YoungSmith, squidlicker,[1] and lolo.ys [2]

Education

They received a BA in English and Art Practice from Stanford University.

Career

YS has worked with various clients, including Magic: The Gathering, Mighty Jaxx, Budweiser, Midori, and KAABOO Music Festival.[3] They have been featured in several galleries, including Hashimoto and Corey Helford Gallery in LA, Miros Gallery in San Francisco, and Outré Gallery in Australia.[4]

Lauren YS's work is influenced by their queer identify, their Asian heritage, and psychedelic music from bands such as the Flaming Lips.[1] Their style has been described as "very otherworldly and alien," by Junior High magazine,[1] "surreal" by Vice Magazine,[5] and "riddled with tentacles, pink robots, geishas and bloody things" by Juxtapose magazine.[6] They use "intense bold colors" and "detailed line-and-brushwork" in their work,[6] often to explore the female form and queer experience.[3]
