Laura Blue Palmer Sawaya (born February 19, 1976) is an American oil painter, milliner, and photographer. Specializing in abstract landscapes, her work is inspired by nature.

Biography

Laura Sawaya was born in Roanoke, Virginia in 1976, to Patricia and Charles Palmer. Her family came from a long line of artists, including her grandfather, Allen Ingles Palmer. Growing up, Laura was drawn to art from an early age, frequently taking lessons after school. In her teens, she attended summer camp at the Savannah College of Art and Design and was later accepted. She attended college at the University of Montana, but transferred to the San Francisco Art institute, earning her Bachelors in Fine Arts in 1999. This time allowed her to develop her distinct style. She soon settled in Missoula Montana where she met her husband, Michael Sawaya.

Style

Her work takes great inspiration from the nature around her and she enjoys outdoor activities as well as the time in her home art studio. While much of her work is focused towards evocative abstract landscapes, she loves painting still life birds and sea creatures and makes large abstract paintings that use colorful brush strokes intended to draw your eyes to a point. She says 'I love to work with color and light in representing the moods and places I have seen in the wilderness.' To her, she explains that a painting is like a memory that can be brought alive with the right technic.
