Lars Adrian Giske (born 2 April 1987) is a Norwegian editor and investigative journalist who works with artificial intelligence in newsroom development. He serves as Head of AI at iTromsø, part of Polaris Media ASA.
Career
Giske began his career as a reporter specialising in data-driven and investigative journalism. At iTromsø, he later moved into product development and digital innovation, focusing on the application of machine-learning methods in editorial work.
Within Polaris Media, he leads one of five regional AI and development hubs that experiment with newsroom tools, automation and workflow support. Other hubs are located at Sunnmørsposten, Fædrelandsvennen, Adresseavisen, and Göteborgs-Posten. He has also worked on projects related to newsroom strategy and the development of editorial tools.
Projects
Giske was part of the team that developed Djinn, a system designed to analyse zoning and planning documents to identify potential stories of public interest. The project has been discussed in academic literature and covered in national and international media, including Der Spiegel. He has also contributed to methods for AI-assisted investigative and data-driven journalism, and to the design of live-news and coordination workflows.
Approach to AI and journalism
Giske’s approach to artificial intelligence in journalism emphasises the use of automation to support, rather than replace, editorial work. With a background in philosophy, he has described AI as a way to extend journalistic capacity while maintaining professional autonomy. He has organised workshops and forums for journalists in Norway and abroad focusing on newsroom technology and collaboration.
