Commodore Laraine Frances Orthlieb, CMM,CD is a retired Canadian Forces Naval Reserve officer. Joining the Naval Reserves in 1959 she went on serve many roles during her time. In 1977 she served as training officer at HMCS Tecumseh. Later she was appointed as HMCS Tecumseh's Commanding Officer (CO) from 1983-1987. During her time as CO, HMCS Tecumseh was awarded the Silver Destroyer Award for being the Best Naval Reserve Division in Canada. [1]

In 1989, Orthlieb was promoted to the rank of Commodore and appointed Senior Naval Reserve Advisor, thus becoming the first female flag officer. [2]

Honours

In 1986, Orthlieb was appointed an Officer of the Order of Military Merit (OMM) in recognition of "outstanding meritorious service in duties of responsibility".[3]

In 1991, she promoted to Commander of the Order of Military Merit (CMM) in recognition of "outstanding meritorious service and demonstrated leadership in duties of great responsibility".[3]

In 1993, Orthlieb was added to Women's Hall of Fame, New Brunswick Branch of United Nations Association of Canada.[1]
