Lara Somogyi (Born September, 9 1991) is an American harpist and composer.
Early Life and Education
Born to Hungarian parents[1], Lara Somogyi was raised in Kauai, Hawaii and New York[2]. She attended Orchard Park High School[3] located in Orchard Park, New York. There she received the 2007 Eleanor Millonzi Scholarship presented by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Volunteer Foundation[4].
Somogyi is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, which also awarded her an Honorary Associate in 2018 because of her musical accomplishments[5].
Artist
Somogyi is an active electronic artist and composer. In September 2022[6] she released her debut album ‘!’ (pronounced “Exclamation”)[7] on Universal Music Group’s Mercury KX Label, with singles titled “acceptances”, “basis”, and “hundred00”[8]. The 8-track record was produced and co-composed with Cyrus Reynolds in Somogyi’s home studio in Los Angeles.[9] ‘!’ has been received by Wonderland Magazine as having “blissful, meditative, and daring ambient harp-centred productions”.[10] Her own artistic identity has been defined by her use of electronics, looper and fx pedals.[11]
Live Performer
As an accomplished live performer on harp, Somogyi has performed with a variety of popular artists, ranging from pop singers such as Ariana Grande, Madison Beer, and Camila Cabello to seasoned performers like Kelly Clarkson, Josh Groban and Billy Idol. She has also played harp alongside R&B artists like H.E.R., Ashanti, John Legend, Kiana Lede, and Anderson .Paak as well as indie artists such as Melanie Martinez, Bazzi, and Bonobo[12]. Her live performances have also been featured at the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Noon Til Midnight Festival at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.[13]
Musical Styles
To create her unique sound, which is a fusion between the electronic and classical worlds of music, Somogyi combines harp, electronics, loopers, and fx pedals[14]. She also uses innovative techniques like including sounds made from unconventional items in her recordings such as a milk frother, Blu-Tak and alligator clips[15]. Some of her musical influences include Brian Eno, Bonobo, Jon Hopkins, Nils Frahm, and Ólafur Arnalds[16].
