Lanelay Hall is a 18th century Georgian manor house located in Talbot Green, South Wales on the West Bank of the River Ely at the base of Garth Maelwg. The current house was built on the site of a previous medieval farmhouse where records show settlement from the 14th century. It has been the home to many affluent families of the time, including the Mathew Family of Castell y Mynach, The Bassett Family and William Vaughn.[1] Some of the most notable residents include Christopher Cole (Royal Navy officer) and Henry Fox Talbot.

History

The original farmhouse is believed to have been built by the Mathew family, who lived on the land in the 16th and 17th centuries. However in 1821, this original house had been passed over to Christopher Bassett of Lanelay through marriage to the last female Mathew heir who then built the current Georgian Mansion. Lanelay Hall then stayed within the Bassett family for generations eventually reaching sisters Joan and Eleanor, locally known as the Maids of Lanelay, who upon their deaths signalled the last of the direct blood line descent of Lanelay.[2]

Much of Lanelay Hall was refurbished at a point between 1870-1920 in a Gothic Revival architecture style and much of the original mouldings, oak wall panelling, fireplaces and fittings still exist today.

1950s - 2010

In the Early 1950s Lanelay Hall was acquired by the South Wales Fire Service as it's headquarters. Here they added on a large extension, which has since been demolished. This was then sold to private developers in 2009 and it stayed unused and derelict until 2017.[3]
