Kyla Danelle Romero is a Filipino film director, screenwriter, and producer. She gained international recognition as the first Filipina director to compete at the Cannes Film Festival with Agapito in 2025. Additionally, she co-wrote Ali, a Bangladeshi short film produced by Tanveer Hossain, which also competed at Cannes.
Early Life and Education
Romero was born in the Philippines to Danny Romero, a veteran Filipino sportscaster. Her father's extensive career in Philippine sports and media influenced her storytelling and communication style. She pursued her studies in psychology at the University of the Philippines Pampanga (UP Pampanga), graduating with a degree that has deeply influenced her narrative approach to film, often exploring psychological themes.
Career
Romero began her career in writing and filmmaking as a playwright and screenwriter. She co-wrote the short film Ria, which received a special mention at Talents Tokyo and was selected for development at the 2022 Cannes Festival La Résidence. In 2022, she directed her debut short film, Dosena (Twelfth), which received a nomination at the Gawad Urian Awards for Best Short Film. In 2023, Dosena was also nominated for Best Short Film at the FAMAS Awards, marking a significant achievement in her career.
In 2023, Romero co-wrote Hinakdal, which garnered multiple awards at the Montañosa Film Festival, including the Audience Choice Award, NETPAC Award, and Best Screenplay.
Romero co-wrote Radikals in 2024, a short film directed by Arvin Belarmino, which was selected for the Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 2025, Kyla made history as a co-director of Agapito, which was selected for the Short Films Competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
