Kumar Mahabir is a well-known Trinidadian academic, journalist, and social commentator who has made significant contributions to the fields of education and media in Trinidad and Tobago.

Mahabir was born in 1955 in the village of Plum Mitan, on the east coast of Trinidad. He grew up in a family of Indian descent and attended Plum Mitan Presbyterian School and North Eastern College. Mahabir earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literatures in English from the University of the West Indies, an M.Phil in the same field, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Florida in 1997. His dissertation focused on traditional health beliefs and practices of postnatal women in Trinidad. Since 2022, Kumar Mahabir has been a senior lecturer in the Department of Language and Cultural Studies at the University of Guyana. He is also a Research Fellow of The Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library, a former assistant professor at the University of Trinidad and Tobago, and a recipient of several academic awards. Mahabir's work experience includes being an assistant lecturer in communications at the University of the West Indies from 2003 to 2006, a reviewer for the School Textbook Evaluation Committee at the UNESCO Division in the Ministry of Education in Port-of-Spain in 2000, and a lecturer in communications at COSTAATT (Community College) in Port-of-Spain from 2000 to 2006. He was also an assistant professor in the School for Education Programmes at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) from 2007 to 2018 and a vice-chairman of the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago from 2016 to 2019. Mahabir has authored several publications, including [1], published by Chakra Publishing House in 1990. He has also contributed chapters to books and journals on topics such as the marginalization of Indian men in advertisements in Trinidad and Tobago, the practice of "Jharay," and its relevance in modern medical practice, and the phenomenon of Ramleela/Ramlila theatre in Trinidad. Additionally, Mahabir is the chairman of CHAKRA Publishing and the Indo-Caribbean Cultural Centre Co. Ltd. in San Juan, Trinidad and Tobago. In recognition of his contributions to education, he was awarded the National Award (Silver) for Education in 2011 and the Hummingbird Medal (Silver) for loyal and devoted service to the nation in the field of education in the same year.
