Kumar Bahuleyan (born 5 March 1927) is an Indian-American neurosurgeon and Kerala's first neurosurgeon.[1] He completed his MBBS from Madras Medical College, Tamil Nadu in 1954. He did his training in neurosurgery from University of Edinburgh, Scotland.[2]

Early life and education

He was born in poverty into an "untouchable" caste in a village called Chemmanakary near Vaikom, now in Kottayam district, Kerala. He was the eldest among the 5 children of Janaki and Kumaran. His village had no drinking water, electricity, toilets, schools, phones or medical care facilities. While 3 of his siblings succumbed to death from typhoid due to contaminated drinking water, Bahuleyan managed to survive. He did his highschool in Government High school, Vaikom during the Indian independence movement and was influenced by the Congress ideologies. He passed top of his class in 10th and joined UC college, Aluva for his intermediate in science. He completed his intermediate in 1949 and was placed first class and 2nd rank in Travancore-Cochin. Kerala(Thiru-Kochi) had no medical colleges back then, hence seats were reserved in New Delhi, Calcutta and Madras medical colleges for Thiru-Kochi. Bahuleyan was 1 of the 8 students elected from the province/state for medical education and completed his MBBS from Madras Medical College in 1954.[3]

Career

After completing his MBBS, Dr Bahuleyan was sent by the state government for training in neurosurgery at the University of Edinburgh. He returned to India in 1964 after spending 6 years there.[4] In 1965, he was drafted into the army during the Indo-Pakistani war.
