Kristian Day (born 1985) is an American filmmaker, producer, and composer based in Des Moines, Iowa. He is known for directing the documentary television series The Last American Gay Bar (2024),[1] and for producing the true-crime films ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chief’s Clothing (2024)[2] and Taken Together: Who Killed Lyric and Elizabeth? (2024).[3]
Early life
Day was born in Moline, Illinois, in 1985, and later relocated to Des Moines, Iowa.[4] He is self-taught in filmmaking and began working in independent film production in the late 2000s.
Film career
Day began his career working on regional independent and horror film projects. His early film composition work included the features 100 Tears (2007), Mutilation Mile (2009), and Fell (2010).[5]
He later directed and produced documentary and nonfiction films, including Capone’s Whiskey: The Story of Templeton Rye. The project was covered in statewide media as part of Iowa’s developing documentary community.[6]
In 2024, Day produced two nationally distributed documentaries: ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chief’s Clothing,[7] and Taken Together: Who Killed Lyric and Elizabeth?, which examined a 2012 double homicide in Evansdale, Iowa.[8]
Television
Day expanded into nationally distributed documentary television in 2024. He directed the six-episode series The Last American Gay Bar, which chronicles the history of The Blazing Saddle in Des Moines and the evolution of LGBTQ+ social spaces in the United States.[9][10] The series received additional coverage in regional press outlets and community media.[11]
Day served as a producer on the Prime Video documentary ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chief’s Clothing (2024), which follows the case of Kansas City Chiefs fan Xaviar Babudar.[12][13]
He also produced the Max documentary Taken Together: Who Killed Lyric and Elizabeth? (2024), which investigated the disappearance and murder of two girls in Evansdale, Iowa.[14]
Music and composition
Day has composed music for independent and underground horror films. His early work included scores for 100 Tears (2007), Mutilation Mile (2009), and Fell (2010).[15] He also composed for several films in the American splatter-horror series American Guinea Pig, including Bouquet of Guts and Gore (2014), Bloodshock (2015), and The Song of Solomon (2017). Coverage of his soundtrack work appears in genre-specific publications.[16]
Journalism and writing
Day is a regular contributor to the Des Moines weekly newspaper Cityview. He writes the recurring column Des Moines Forgotten, which documents lesser-known stories, buildings, and figures from the city’s cultural and architectural history.[17] He previously wrote the feature column Couch Surfing, which covered regional arts and creative culture.[18]
Broadcasting
Day is the creator and host of Iowa Basement Tapes, a weekly radio program focused on Iowa underground music history. The series airs on KFMG-LP in Des Moines and is syndicated on public radio stations KWIT and KOJI.[19][20]
Daylite Pictures
Day is the founder of Daylite Pictures, a film and television production company based in Des Moines. The company has produced or collaborated on documentary projects for national streaming platforms.[21]
