Notable for his performances in films such as "U Turn" (2016), "6ne Maili" (2018), "The Terrorist" (2018), "Thayige Thakka Maga" (2018), "ACT 1978" (2020), "Saddu Vicharane Nadeyuttide" (2022), "Sakutumba Sametha" (2022) and "19.20.21" (2023), he has garnered widespread acclaim. He is also a distinguished theatre artist who has actively contributed as an accomplished actor, director and writer.

1. Actor

Hebbale is an accomplished theatre artist who has been actively involved in the field since 1995. He has participated in more than 30 plays, documentaries, and short films. He has worked with renowned theatre groups in Bangalore, such as Sanchaya, Ranga Shankara, and Aneka. Krishna has collaborated with directors of national and international acclaim from institutions like NSD, Neenasam, Rangayana and many others from the Kannada theatre circle. Some of his notable plays include Tempest, Meghadootha, Mrichakatika, Macbeth, Chandrahasa, Shastraparva, Mastakaabhisheka Rehearsal, Aagamana, Choori katte Arthath Kalyanapura, Pratibimbagalu, Aaspota, Biruku, Bahumukhi, Nammoora Benkibaakaru, Maryade Prashne, Tadroopi, Sangya Balya, and Kelu Janamejaya, among others. Krishna has had the privilege of performing in various prestigious theatre festivals across India, including the renowned "Bharath Rang Mahotsav," organized by the National School of Drama in New Delhi, as well as the Ranga Shankara annual festivals, Bahuroopi (Rangayana – 2010), and Neenasam, among others.

2. Director

He has directed numerous proscenium and street plays, performing approximately 80 shows across various locations in Karnataka, Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar, Mumbai, New Delhi, and more. One of his notable achievements includes translating and directing the groundbreaking play "Yugapurush" in 2016. This philosophical play depicts the journey of Mahatma Gandhi and his mentor Sri. Rajchandra Guruji. The project received sponsorship from the Government of Karnataka and involved collaboration with Srimad Rajchandra Mission, Dharampur. The play premiered at the Banquet Hall of Vidhana Soudha and was attended by esteemed legislative figures from Karnataka.[1] In addition to this, Krishna Hebbale has also directed plays such as "Kododilla Bidodilla" (a play by Dario Fo, 2018)[2], "Kamala" (by Vijay Tendulkar, 2017), "Twelfth Night" (by William Shakespeare, 2016)[3], and more.

3. Writer

He is a theatre artist who has made significant contributions to Kannada theatre. He is known for adapting and translating well-known plays into Kannada, such as Dario Fo's "Can't Pay Won't Pay" and Uttam Gada's "Yugapurush"[4]. Additionally, he is currently working on a new play that focuses on the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits.

Cinema

Krishna Hebbale is a versatile actor who has appeared in more than 15 films in Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi languages[5]. He gained recognition for his performances in the path breaking feature film of Indian film history “Lucia”, which was the first crowd funded feature film in Kannada[6]. After that, he starred in the movie called 'U-Turn,' which became another groundbreaking film for the Kannada audience[7]. Both these films received international acclaim and were pioneers in their respective genres[8][9]. Krishna also played significant roles in other notable movies such as "Taayige Takka Maga" directed by Shashank and "Sipaayi" directed by Rajath Mayee. In addition to his film work, he has acted in over 20 short films. Krishna has recently completed writing a feature film titled "Ruhi," which focuses on the successful rehabilitation of a college girl entangled in drugs, deception, and prostitution. This project involved extensive research on the habits, addictions, and underlying causes among today's youth, aiming to shed light on their psychological needs and the role of counseling in the recovery process.

Academics

He has created a Theatre course for the Department of Visual Communication and Performing Arts at Jyoti Nivas College in Bangalore.[10] This 3-year B. Voc graduation course is recognized by UGC and funded by the National Skill Development Council. It is a full credit course that covers Theatre studies throughout all three years and has a curriculum completely developed by Krishna Hebbale for the entire course. From 2014 to 2018, Krishna served as the coordinator and faculty of the department, overseeing activities like infrastructure development, exam procedures, and collaborations with the industry. Currently, Krishna is an Academic Consultant for the course[11]. Additionally, Krishna has established theatre clubs in a few colleges in Bangalore and has conducted various workshops and seminars to train actors and theatre practitioners.[12][13][14][15]

Early Life

Krishna Hebbale was born in Bangalore on 17th May 1974. He is an alumnus of BHS College, Jayanagar, where he completed his B.Com and went on to pursue a master's degree from Mysore University. During his school years, he was actively involved in drama performances and later pursued theatre as a serious hobby in college. He worked as a businessman before choosing a career in films. He made his acting debut in Pawan Kumar's Lucia.

Career

Theatre

Hebbale is a theatre actor in Bengaluru. He has been actively involved in theatre activities as an actor, director, and writer. He has performed lead roles in plays by famous playwrights, including Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and Molière's works. On-stage, he has portrayed various characters such as Prasanna in "Tadroopi," Vivek Shanbhag in "Bhumukhi," and Chandrahasa in "Chandrahasa". He has collaborated with renowned directors like R. Nagesh, Suresh Anagalli, Nataraj Honnavalli, Joseph, and many others. He has participated in theatre festivals across India, including the National School of Drama's Bharat Rang Mahotsav.

He has translated/adapted Dario Fo's "Can't Pay Won't Pay" into Kannada and has also directed it. Additionally, he has directed Vijay Tendulkar's play 'Kamla'.

He has also acted in numerous short films and has written and directed 'Ruhi,' a poignant exploration of the sociopsychological aspects of prostitution prevalent among college students.

Furthermore, he is an academician who served as the head of the Department of Performing Arts at Jyoti Nivas College, Bangalore, from 2014 to 2018. He regularly imparts theatre techniques through various workshops.

Movies

Hebbale began his movie career with the path-breaking feature film Lucia, which was the first crowdfunded venture in Kannada. This was followed by U-Turn, which became a trendsetter. Both these films won him critical acclaim. This was followed by Taayige Takka Maga, in which he played the lead antagonist. This performance garnered much notice and led to his performances with star actors Shivaraj Kumar, Sudeep, Darshan, and Puneeth Rajkumar. He also acted in the 2019 top-grosser Yajamana, Act 1978 from the National Award-winning director Manso Re, Law directed by Shashank in 2020, and Drishya 2 in 2021.

Hebbale has also worked in other languages. He made his debut in Hindi with the acclaimed web series Avrodh 2. He has worked in Love Life and Pakodi (Telugu) and After Operation London Café (Marathi), which is yet to be released.

He frequently does voice-overs and has been part of Avane Srimannarayana.

Hebbale is passionate about teaching and conducts actor training workshops for aspiring media actors.
