Kottakkal Kanaran Gurukkal (1854 - 1938) was the pioneer in reviving kalaripayattu after it was being banned by British. He was the master of C. V. Narayanan Nair, a kalari practitioner who helped in spreading kalaripayattu around India.[1][2][3][4]
Kottakkal Kanaran Gurukkal had wandered southern India to learn different techniques of kalaripayattu and other martial arts including wrestling. He sold many acres of land to finance his wanderings.} He was the pioneer in reviving kalaripayattu in the 19th century.
