Kono Toshiyuki (河野 俊行, born in Osaka, 1958) is a Japanese professor and lawyer, internationally known for his academic research on private international law and the enforcement of intellectual property rights. Kono has also made contributions in the field of national and international protection of cultural property. In 2018, he was the first Japanese citizen to be elected president of the International Council on Monuments and Sites [ICOMOS International],[1] a professional association that works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places around the world,[2] after having served several years as chairman of the Committee for Cultural Affairs in Japan’s National Commission for UNESCO. Concurrently, he also the Director and President of the International Academy of Commercial and Consumer Law [IACCL],[3] an organization composed of more than hundred international commercial and consumer law scholars from throughout the world.[4]

Career

Kono was born in Osaka, Japan in 1958. He graduated from Kyoto University Faculty of Law in 1981 and later passed the Japanese Bar Exam in the same year. He received his LL.M. from Kyoto University in 1983. He was appointed as a tenured Associate Professor of Law at Kyushu University in 1986. He was appointed tenured Professor 1986 and is currently the Director of LL.M./ LL.D. Programs of Kyushu University.[5]
