Kody Winn Brown (born January 17, 1969) is an American reality television personality best known as the patriarch of the polygamist family featured on TLC's reality series Sister Wives.[1][2] The show, which debuted in 2010, chronicles the lives of Kody, his wives, and their 18 children, offering insight into the complexities of plural marriage in contemporary America.[3][4][5]

Early life and background

Kody Brown was born in Lovell, Wyoming, to William Winn Brown and Genielle Brown. Raised in the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), his family later embraced fundamentalist Mormon beliefs, including the practice of polygamy. Kody's father entered into a plural marriage when Kody was a teenager, influencing Kody's own views on polygamy.

Career

Before gaining fame through reality television, Brown held various jobs.[6] He worked in online advertising sales, reportedly earning about $4,000 a month. He also served as the president of Das Hundhaus Firearms and Accessories, a gun company based in Sandy, Utah, until 2004.[7]

In 2010, Brown and his family became the subjects of Sister Wives, a reality TV series on TLC that documents the daily lives and challenges of a polygamist family.[8] The show's success brought national attention to the Brown family and sparked discussions about the legality and dynamics of plural marriage in the United States.[9]

Personal life

Kody Brown has been involved in multiple marriages:

  • Meri Barber: Kody's first wife, whom he legally married in 1990. They have one child together. In 2014, Kody divorced Meri to legally marry Robyn but remained spiritually married to Meri until their separation in 2022.[10]
  • Janelle Schriever: Entered into a spiritual marriage with Kody in 1993. They have six children together. Janelle and Kody separated in 2022.[11]
  • Christine Allred: Became Kody's third wife through a spiritual marriage in 1994. They share six children. Christine left the marriage in 2021.[12]
  • Robyn Sullivan: Kody entered into a spiritual marriage with Robyn in 2010 and legally married her in 2014. They have two biological children together, and Kody legally adopted Robyn's three children from a previous marriage.[13]

As of 2025, Robyn remains Kody's only wife.
