Kodikaal Vellalar
Kodikaal Vellalar is a Caste From Indian State of Tamil Nadu.[1] They Are Predominantly Wealthy Landlords,Agriculturalists and Village Administrators.[2][3]
Etymology
The Vellalars who does "Kodikaal"(Betel Leaves) Farming is known as Kodikaal Vellalar.They predominantly use title "Pillai" as a surname.
History
Kodikaal Vellalars specialized in Agriculture Especially Betel Farming. They Were Dominant During Pandya And Chola's Rule.
The Tamil society during the early Pandyan age had several class distinctions among the people, which were different from the Vedic classification of Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras. The highest class below the king, among the Tamils, was the Arivar or the sages. They were the ascetics that renounced materialism and mostly lived outside the cities. Next in rank were the Ulavar or the farmers. The Vellalars stand here in the social hierarchy in top level.[4]
Distribution
Kodikaal Vellalars are mainly distributed in Pandya Nadu-(Lit:Madurai,Theni,Dindugul,Ramanathapuram,Thirunelveli,Virudhunagar,Tenkasi,Sivagangai,Thootukudi etc..,)
Present Status
They are not Classified Into any classes of reservation (Namely-FC,BC,MBC).
