Kim Riddlebarger is one of the foremost scholars in the Reformed theology tradition of Christianity specializing in eschatology, or the doctrine of last things.[1]. Riddlebarger is widely referenced in scholarly circles both within and outside of the Reformed tradition for popularizing for the 21st century the historically most prevalent Christian view of end times known as amillennialism. Simply put, this viewpoint holds that the Second Coming of Christ, the rapture of the church, and the final judgment are one simultaneous event that will occur at the end of the church age. It will mark the end of redemptive and world history and inaugurate the new heavens and new earth. In advance of this event, general signs of the church age (wars, pandemics, religious deception, economic hard times, etc.) will increase, but at a timetable and to a level known only to God, ensuring Christians always be ready for Christ's imminent return[2].
Historically, many amillennialists have denied a specific redemptive role for ethnic Israel. But Riddlebarger maintains that a religious revival leading Jewish people to faith in Jesus as their Messiah will occur at the end of the church age, based on the Apostle Paul's teachings in Romans 9-11[3].
Riddlebarger sets forth this simplified view of Christian eschatology in two books, A Case for Amillennialism: Understanding the End Times[4], which provides a broad overview of Christian millennial models and why amillennialism is the historic consensus[5], and The Man of Sin: Uncovering the Truth about the Antichrist[6], looking at the New Testament doctrine of Antichrist from the perspective of an ongoing opposition to the church that will culminate in a final manifestation immediately preceding the return of Jesus Christ[7][8].
Biography
Riddlebarger is a fourth generation Californian and a 1977 business graduate of California State University, Fullerton[9]. He would go on to earn graduate and doctoral degrees from Westminster Seminary California and Fuller Theological Seminary, respectively. His doctoral dissertation was on B.B. Warfield, a well-known conservative 19th century theologian at Princeton University known as the "Lion of Princeton.[10]"
From 1995 to 2020, Riddlebarger was the senior pastor of Christ Reformed Church in Anaheim, California, which is part of the United Reformed Church of North America, a theologically conservative Reformed body that roots its faith in Scripture and the 16th century creeds such as the Heidelberg Catechism and Belgic Confession
Riddlebarger has been a regular contributor to the White Horse Inn, a radio and podcast program presenting Christian faith from a Reformed perspective[11].
In addition to his studies of eschatology, Riddlebarger has also authored an in-depth commentary on I Corinthians, arguably the most practical and problem-oriented Pauline Epistle[12]. His teachings may be found on the Blessed Hope Podcast[13].
