Kim Dong-su (Korean|hangul=김동수; born 1978) is a South-Korean writer and illustrator of children's books. Her best-known works include The Day I Caught a Cold, Give Mommy a Kiss, and Goodbye, Farewell.

Life

Kim Dong-su was born in Daejeon, South Korea, in 1978. She loved drawing from an early age, and went on to major in Western painting at Dongduk Women’s University. Kim began dreaming of creating picture books when, as a junior, she came across some works by picture book artists in <Illust Monthly> in the periodicals room in her college library. She won the Grand Prize at the 2001 Korea Publishing Arts Competition, and her a career as a picture book author began in earnest when she won the Award for Excellence at the Borim Original Picture Book Competition with The Day I Caught a Cold in 2002. She is known for a pared-down but bold approach not bound by conventional thinking, with images drawn from a child’s perspective. Kim currently lives in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, with her husband and daughter.

Career

Kim received the Grand Prize at the 2001 Korea Publishing Arts Competition, held by the Korean Publishing Arts Association, with The Invincible Rubber Band-Powered Machine. She also won the Award for Excellence at the 3rd Borim Original Picture Book Competition with The Day I Caught a Cold in 2002. The Invincible Rubber Band-Powered Machine was selected as one of 100 notable Korean books at the 2005 Frankfurt International Book Fair,[1] and Give Mommy a Kiss was approached by many countries when it was introduced at the 2009 Tokyo International Book Fair and the 2010 Bologna Children’s Book Fair. The Day I Caught a Cold, The Invincible Rubber Band-Powered Machine, and Give Mommy a Kiss were included in the “49 Korean Picture Books Recognized Worldwide” exhibition at the Guadalajara International Book Fair.[2] The three works were also introduced as part of 130 picture books representing Korea at the 2016 Paris International Book Fair, and included in the “Seven Emotions in 130 Picturebooks” exhibition.[3] Goodbye, Farewell was selected as one of the entries representing Korea for the 2017 BIB,[4]and was introduced to Turkish readers at the Istanbul International Book Fair as part of “58 Korean Picture Books Recognized Worldwide.”[5] It was also chosen as one of 50 Korean picture books exhibited at the Guest of Honor Pavilion at the 2019 Göteborg Book Fair.[6] Give Mommy a Kiss and Goodbye, Farewell was selected as one of 100 Korean picture books exhibited at the Guest of Honor Pavilion at the 2022 Bogotá International Book Fair.[7]

Style

Kim Dong-su draws with ink on traditional Korean paper, and colors using gouache, watercolors, and watercolor pencils. She is delighted by the outlandish thoughts and worries typical of children, and renders them with simple, artless strokes. The Day I Caught a Cold received praise as “a beautiful book that opens the eyes and minds of children.”[8] Goodbye, Farewell conveys the author’s heartfelt grief for roadkill animals. Kim says that her favorite among all the animals that appear in her books is the duck. Ducks play an important role in The Day I Caught a Cold as well as Goodbye, Farewell and she is attached to them more than the others. Ducks are a familiar presence by the stream in the neighborhood where she lives. Kim hopes that her books will be remembered by children as the first friends they made.
