Kevin S. Jones Ph.D. is a neurophysiologist and pharmacologist. He currently is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan Medical School.[1][2]

Education and Career

Jones is a first-generation high school student and grew up in San Diego, California.[3] Jones earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Coppin State University in 1994 and his Ph.D. in Neuropharmacology from Duke University in 2001.[4] Jones then completed his first post-doctoral position at Cajal Institute in Molecular Neurobiology in 2003.[4] From 2006 to 2008, Jones worked as an Instructor of Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology at Pomona College and subsequently became an Assistant professor|Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at Western University of Health Sciences from 2008 to 2009.[4] Jones then completed his second post-doctoral position in Electrophysiology at Children's National Medical Center from 2009 to 2012 before joining the faculty of Howard University an Assistant Professor of Biology in 2012.[4] In 2016, Jones became an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan Medical School.[4][5] Jones has also worked as an Instructor for the Summer Program in Neuroscience, Excellence and Success at the Marine Biological Laboratory from 2010 to the present.[4][6]

Research

Jones's laboratory uses transgenic mouse and zebrafish models to investigate the mechanisms of novel therapeutic targets for mental health disorders such as schizophrenia, post traumatic stress disorder, and depression.[7][8] Jones's primary research interest is in how ionotropic glutamate receptors mediate excitatory neurotransmission.[7][8] Jones discovered how the NMDA receptor antagonist dizocilpine disrupts physiological function in fast spiking Interneuron|interneurons.[9] His laboratory is currently focused on examining the Biophysics|biophysical mechanisms of NMDA receptor antagonists, and further distinguishing between the mechanistic function of psychotomimetic NMDA receptor antagonists such as phencyclidine, dizocilpine, and ketamine and non-psychotomimetic NMDA receptor antagonists such as memantine.[8] His laboratory performs a variety techniques including calcium imaging, patch clamp, immunohistochemistry, microelectrode array, and light sheet fluorescence microscopy.[8]

Memberships and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Work

Jones currently serves as the chair of the Diversity in Neuroscience Sub-Committee of the Society for Neuroscience Professional Development Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee of Neuropharmacology Division of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.[8] He is also a member of the Society for Neuroscience, and is the immediate Past-President of the DC metro chapter of the Society for Neuroscience.[8][10] Jones is passionate about expanding participation of underrepresented groups in neuroscience and has participated in multiple interviews about his experience navigating academia as a person of color.[3][4][11]
