Kevin McAteer is an Irish politician and Journalist from Newry, Northern Ireland. He served as a Councillor from 2014 - 2017 serving the Newry DEA of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.[1] He currently works as a Journalist for Down News[2] and regularly contributes to blogs such as Progressive Politics NI and Grassroots Democracy.

Kevin McAteer was Born in Newry , Northern Ireland. He attended St Colman's College, Newry, Queen's University of Belfast (QUB)[3] and the University of Ulster. He obtained a Joint Honours Degree in Sociology and Social Anthropology at Queens and a diploma in Chemistry, Biology and Physics at the University of Ulster. He works for the Northern Ireland Ambulance service.
Political Career
Between 2014 and 2017, he was a Councillor on Newry, Mourne and District District Council for The Newry area. He was elected with the SDLP at the 2014 local government elections but left the party after 5 years and stood as an Independent in 2015 following disagreements with party leaders.[4] He ran in the 2017 Assembly election but stood down due to medical reasons and took a break from politics.[5]
He courted national controversy in 2018 when it was revealed that a priest refused to marry him and his fiancee due to his pro choice beliefs. The issue was national news as well as making headlines in america. he remains an advocate for pro choice.[6]
As of 2020 he is a member of the Alliance Party.

He is a Journalist for Down News and a broadcaster for IUR FM. He writes articles for blog sites such as progressive politics NI and Grassroots democracy.

He is a member of NIPSA and the National Union of Journalists.
