Kendra Marie Foster is an American singer/songwriter, a prolific session singer & backup vocalist born in Tallahassee, Florida (January 29, 1978). She sang for acts such as George Clinton, Parliament-Funkadelic, Snoop Dogg and D'Angelo & The Vanguard.

Career

She has toured and recorded with Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winners George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic (P Funk). And most notably a credited session singer and songwriter on 8 out of 12 songs on American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist D'Angelo's critically acclaimed 3rd studio album "Black Messiah".[1][2][3] credited to D'Angelo and the Vanguard. She has earned 3 Grammy nominations, and won 2 Grammy Awards [4] for Best R&B Album Black Messiah, and a 2nd Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for ""Really Love" at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. Black Messiah was released by RCA Records on December 15, 2014, debuted at No. 5 on the US Billboard 200 chart and No. 1 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, selling over 117,000 units in its first week.

She has performed on Saturday Night Live in 2015,[5] toured as a backup singer for D'Angelo & The Vanguard 3 times on Occupy Music Tour (2012), The Liberation Tour (2012), and The Second Coming Tour (D'Angelo) (2015). Performing at major music festivals like Made in America Festival, Bonnaroo, and a sold out concert at the Best Buy Theater[6][7][8]

Early Life

Kendra is a woman of African American decent and a natural redhead, as a young girl in Tallahassee Florida Kendra began singing at her local baptist church. By the time she became a teen her interest in Jazz music developed in High School. Kendra learned many Jazz standards during that time by influential singers like Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Nancy Wilson, and Ella Fitzgerald. Kendra attended Florida A&M University[9][10]. Where she became a member of Orchesis Contemporary Dance Theatre and took part in the Urban Bush Women Institute, dancing is another one of her many passions. Kendra met George Clinton through a mutual musician friend by chance who happened to be working as an engineer at George's Florida recording studio. She regularly came by the studio to record when she could in between her classes. After a year George Clinton took notice, signed her to a production deal and invited her on tour becoming a member of Parliment-Funkadelic. She went on the road performing night after night while writing songs in between shows, which helped get the attention of D'Angelo. Subsequently joining D'Angelo's band 'The Vanguard' as a touring session singer and songwriter.

Collaborations

A credited songwriter on "A Warning For The Heart" on Sunshine Anderson's The Sun Shines Again the album peaked at No. 50 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Billboard chart. She sings on "U Can Depend On Me", "Bounce 2 This" and "Trust In Yourself", on George Clinton and the P Funk Allstars How Late Do U Have 2BB4UR Absent?. Kendra performed "Bounce 2 This" live on the Tonight Show with George Clinton & the P Funk Allstars in 2006[11]. "Stillness In Motion" and "Our Day Will Come" on George Clinton's George Clinton and His Gangsters of Love album. She is featured on the song "Questions" by Domo Genesis, on his debut studio album Genesis the album peaked at No. 110 on the US Billboard 200 chart[12]. She is credited as a songwriter on Snoop Dogg's album Coolaid on the song "Side Piece". The album peaked at No. 40 on the US Billboard 200 chart, No. 5 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart (Billboard), and No. 3 on the US Independent Albums chart (Billboard)[13].

Studio Albums

Kendra released her debut studio album titled Myriadmorphonicbiocorpomelodicrealityshapeshifter (2003) under a production deal with George Clinton. She also released her 2nd studio album (self-titled) Kendra Foster (2016) [14][15] her songs, “Step into the Light” and “Promise To Stay Here” (from her self-titled album)[16], were featured on BET’s Being Mary Jane and STARZ’s Hightown series respectively.[17][18][19][20][21]
