Keita Ogawa (22 December, 1982 - ) is Japanese musician, drummer, percussionist. Ogawa was born in Kyoto prefecture and grew up in Sasebo, Nagasaki prefecture[1][2]. He is an endorsed artist of Canopus Drums[3], Sabian Cymbal, Vic Firth, LP(Latin Percussion), and Cooperman Company.
Career
Ogawa started drumming at the age of 15[2][4].
After graduating from high school, he spent two years in Kobe, studying drumming at Koyo School of Music[2]. Then, he moved first to Tokyo, and later to US[2]. Ogawa enrolled at Berklee College of Music majoring in hand purcussion rather than drums[1][4]. There, he studied with Jamey Haddad, Eguie Castrillo, Tito De Gracia, David Rosado, and Mark Walker[2].
In 2007, Ogawa visited Brazil for three months, where he further studied with :pt:Jorginho do Pandeiro|Jorginho do Pandeiro, :pt:Celsinho Silva|Celsinho Silva, :pt:Kiko Freitas|Kiko Freitas, and :pt:Márcio Bahia|Márcio Bahia[2].
Ogawa has performed with Yo-Yo Ma, and other established names[2][4]. He is a member of Grammy-winning Snarky Puppy, and other bands and units like J-Squad, Banda Magna, and Pocante[2].
As a member of Snarky Puppy, he won a Grammy in 2017[2], and in 2021[5]. After his first Grammy in 2017, Sasebo city awarded him an honorary title of "tourism ambassador"[4][5].
He travels and plays around the world from his base in New York[2][4].
He also collabprates with major Japanese musicians, including Tomoyo Harada and Misia, and is a member of J-Squad[4].
