Keegan Powell (born May 13, 1992) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer based in Toronto. He has released two full-length studio albums, Previous Pain (2022), and Fear Be Gone (2023). His musical style combines elements of indie rock, brit-pop, psychedelic, and alternative folk.[1]

History

Powell began his eponymous project in 2018, following the end of his band Spells of Vertigo, with the release of his first single, The Door.[2]

After playing in pop-punk band, Use As Directed, Powell embarked on his professional music career in 2012, joining Teenage Kicks (Resolute/EMI) as guitarist on their debut album Spoils of Youth, recorded by Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures.[3] In 2013, Powell departed from Teenage Kicks in order to focus on his own band, Spells of Vertigo. The band were 2015 finalists in 102.1 The Edge "Next Big Thing" contest, and toured across Canada.

Before embarking on his solo project, Powell played guitar in Captured Tracks/Dine Alone band, Chastity. He contributed as guitarist and co-writer alongside Brandon Williams on Chastity releases Death Lust (2018), Home Made Satan (2019), and Suffer Summer (2022).[4]

In 2019, Powell self-released the extended-plays, Is+Was and Headspun, favouring a more shoegaze-y sound reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine and Oasis[5]. His debut full-length album Previous Pain was released in 2022. His second album Fear Be Gone was released in 2023, embracing a more indie folk style. The album was recorded by engineer/producer Matt Snell (Dua Lipa, The Flatliners) using analogue tape.[6]

Keegan also plays lead guitar in Peter Van Helvoort side project, Darling Congress, and contributed to their Brett Emmons (The Glorious Sons) produced debut record, Jubilant Blue.[7]
